Food has been my comfort for so long, so fasting always stirs up emotions I don’t expect. I want to use this season to draw closer to God.

But when the hunger comes… it’s tough. What Bible verses do you read when fasting?

I read Psalm 63:1 the most when fasting. David is in a dry wilderness saying his soul thirsts for God, which is what I need to hear when my stomach is doing the talking. Isaiah 58 and Matthew 4:4 help too.

My first few fasts showed me how often I was grabbing a snack because I was bored or anxious. I keep Isaiah 58 open on my phone during the worst hours… It puts fasting in terms of loosening chains and sharing bread, which is more than getting through the day without eating. The emotions you mentioned tend to show up right where God wants to do the work.

Joel 2:12. If you want the fast to draw you closer to God, that’s the one. He’s asking us to come back with our whole heart.

Food was my comfort for a long time too, so fasting stirs up stuff I wasn’t ready for. When that happens I read Psalm 73:26 and let it sit. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart.

Psalm 107:9 is for when the craving gets loud. I say that one out loud. He fills the hungry with good things. Sometimes it helps, sometimes I’m still hungry.

Psalm 139:23-24, asking God to show me what I’ve been trying to soothe with food. John 6:35 too, Jesus is the bread of life.

When the hunger hits, I stop and pray one of those verses slowly. Some days that works better than others.

I keep Isaiah 58 open during a fast. It’s a practical reminder of what the fast is for.

Reading it slowly during the hardest hours turns whatever surfaces into prayers about mercy and being generous with people who have less.

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but the bored snacking thing hit me hard too, since I never noticed it until my first fast.

Psalm 107:9, out loud. It never made my stomach stop talking, and that’s where Joel 2:12 helps, the “whole heart” part keeps me going.

Hah! Yeah I feel the same. Sometimes a short prayer is enough and I go on but sometimes i need to really distract myself from the hunger.
