Stranger Things has been everywhere and I’m curious what other believers think about it. My coworkers keep raving about it and part of me wants to jump in and see what the fuss is about. The other part hesitates because of the supernatural stuff and demons, or whatever that upside-down world is supposed to represent.

Can Christians watch Stranger Things?

Is it just harmless sci-fi with a nostalgic 80s vibe or does it dabble in things Scripture warns us to steer clear of?

Yes, Christians can watch Stranger Things. The Upside Down is a sci-fi parallel dimension, and the monsters come out of a government lab experiment. The Demogorgon is named after a Dungeons and Dragons creature the kids are playing in the first episode. Nobody in the show casts spells or contacts spirits. I watched it with my spouse, and what stuck with me was the friendship and the way ordinary people keep showing up for each other.

The real question is how it affects you. Does supernatural horror stick in your head and feed fear, or does it roll off you like any other monster movie? There’s the language and a few intense scenes you might want to skip. If that sits fine with your conscience, go ahead and enjoy it with your coworkers.

Christians can watch it. Not every Christian should, though.

The main issue is how graphic the horror gets, along with the violence and language. Later seasons are a lot darker and more gruesome than the 80s nostalgia setting suggests, and some of the kids end up in pretty disturbing situations.

I’d check a content guide before starting. Then watch one episode and see how you feel about it. If it’s entertainment, fine. If it leaves you scared or bothers your conscience, stop there.

You have the freedom to watch, and you also have the freedom to turn it off and not care about missing out.

‘No Christian has any business watching Stranger Things. Your coworkers might as well be handing out tickets to the Upside Down.’ That was the scare I talked myself into before I ever pressed play. Christians can watch Stranger Things. It’s dark fiction, and enjoying a story is different from going out looking for demons.

The show sides hard with the kids nobody believes. Hawkins looks cozy at first, but then the cover-ups show up, along with adults waving off the kids’ screams. Friendships are the point, even if the monster drives the plot.

I wouldn’t call it harmless, but I wouldn’t say Scripture tells you to avoid it just because the threat is supernatural. In this show, the darkness is there to be resisted. Watch it or skip it on those terms, but don’t let the break room hype decide for you.

The friendship angle is what got me too, and the way those kids stick together through everything felt more wholesome than a lot of shows I’ve watched.

If you watch with your kids, pause when the adults brush off the kids’ warnings and talk about who they’d trust for help.

Yeah, the later seasons get darker than the 80s vibe suggests, and the shift sneaks up on you. A couple seasons in, the gore and the situations those kids end up in caught me off guard. So if anyone’s following your “watch one episode and see how you feel” advice, one episode is a low bar for what comes later.

The part I appreciated was you saying there’s freedom to turn it off and not worry about missing out. My spouse and I quit one season partway through for the reason you named: it was bothering our conscience and we weren’t enjoying it anymore.

Keep your own advice handy past episode one. The coworker conversations went on fine without us.

Glad you watched it and paid attention while you did.

‘A scare I talked myself into’ is a good way to put it. A lot of the time the fear comes from imagining what a show is going to be like before you’ve seen any of it.

It can hit later, too. I’ve enjoyed horror movies while watching them, then had certain images pop back up at bedtime and start feeding my anxiety. That told me more about how a movie affected me.

</div>

Yeah, that’s it. I do this with a lot of things, not just this show. I hear a word like “demons” or “the occult” and I’ve already made up my mind before watching a single scene.

I went in with my guard up but paid attention. I’d rather judge it by what’s on the screen. My coworkers hyped it up a lot and made me nervous about it, but neither had much to do with the show itself.

Neither approach is wrong. Some Christians watch it as pure fiction and it never touches their faith at all, while others feel a little nudge of discomfort and skip it.

If you take the stricter side with occult stuff in media, you’re not alone.

That’s the conscience check.

And if something in you stays unsettled while you’re watching, pay attention to it. You don’t need anyone’s permission to step away from a show that doesn’t sit right.

Go ahead and watch it. But remember C. S. Lewis: “The safest road to hell is the gradual one.”

So if the Spirit nudges you to turn it off, even halfway through, trust that nudge over your curiosity.

Your conscience before God matters more than fitting in with what everyone else is watching.

Living as Christ commands means doing what you believe best represents Him, even when other believers disagree with your choices. At my old church I was often the odd one out (avoiding things others had no problem with), and the awkwardness of being different never fully went away.

Genre preferences are personal taste, not a spiritual litmus test.

The Satanic Panic stuff in Season 4 is pretty accurate to the 80s hysteria around D&D. But has anyone seen a real quote from the producers about “government sanctioned satanic ritual abuse”? That claim keeps floating around and I’ve never found a source for it.

The show makes you root for the good guys to expel the evil. The darkness is there to be overcome, not celebrated.

One episode into the new season and I’m hooked on seeing how it plays out.

Stories about evil and monsters can teach us more than sanitized content where nothing goes wrong. Even Scripture has material that would earn an R rating as a movie.

“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful” (1 Corinthians 10:23).

</div>

I’d pass on this one. I caught part of season one because everyone was talking about it. It wasn’t the monsters or the 80s nostalgia. The values the show celebrates aren’t ones I want to celebrate. Then I saw the cast accept an award and what they said up there. Haven’t gone back since.

“Demogorgon” and names like that are mostly D&D nicknames the kids use. The show isn’t claiming they’re biblical demons. That doesn’t make it harmless, but it’s a different question.

It’s more about whether this dark creature feature is something you want to put in your head.

Season 4 has the whole town, prayer-circle types included, deciding the D&D club must be a satanic cult behind the murders. My church did the same thing in '86 and made my cousin throw out his rulebooks.

The show is poking at Christians there. But we earned some of it. If you watch, let it remind you how easy it is to chase the wrong monster while the real one is somewhere else.
