Christians Fasting for 40 Days

Fasting is really about showing God your heart by giving up something. As I see it, it could even be your phone for a week. Something that requires your sacrifice.

Matthew 6 says that the whole thing is meant to be between you and God, not something we broadcast to everyone around us.

For me, a soft fast - cutting sugar or meat in January - plus a three-day fast maybe once a year.

Not saying there’s a right or wrong approach (and I know people have strong opinions on the longer fasts). I feel like the length matters less than what draws you closer.

Fasting is really about what opens up in the silence that hunger creates.

A silence where God’s voice doesn’t have to compete with the constant hum of comfort and routine.

We don’t realize how loud being full is until it’s gone.

Your body reduces certain enzyme levels during extended fasting. And if you jump back into eating normally right after, especially carb-heavy meals, you risk refeeding syndrome. People have died from how they broke the fast.

So have a plan for coming off it. I say start with bone broth, small portions, ease back in over a week or more.

That part is non-negotiable.
