Did Jesus do a water fast or was it a dry fast?

Both Matthew 4 and Luke 4 mention that after 40 days He was hungry, but neither says a word about thirst. And when Satan comes with the temptation, it’s about turning stones into bread. Food, not drink.

I think Jesus did a water fast. Satan offers him bread and Jesus answers with Deuteronomy 8:3, the manna passage about hunger, so the fast seems to have been about food.

Thirst never comes up.

Most likely a water fast, but you’re right that the text never actually says He drank water. Ffasting _normally_ just means going without food unless its specific about water or liquids. Satan going after bread just follows the hunger Matthew and Luke mention.

Luke 4:2 says He ‘ate nothing during those days.’ and the body can’t go forty days without water unless God is keeping it alive by a miracle… so I would say water fast. The dry fasts we actually see in Scripture, like Esther’s, are capped at three days.

Moses and Elijah did go forty days without water, but those were clearly supernatural, and nothing in Matthew or Luke suggests that for Jesus. So I’d read it as the ordinary kind of fast.

The manna passage frames the whole exchange around hunger. But the same chapter also says God brought Israel water out of the flinty rock, so Moses is describing a wilderness where hunger and thirst were both real and both met by God.

If Jesus is deliberately putting Himself in Israel’s forty-year wilderness test, does quoting the bread verse say anything about water (see [this](https://forum.victoriousinprayer.com/t/anyone-here-ever-done-a-40-day-fast-like-jesus/1719))?

Deuteronomy 8 also mentions water from the rock, so the Israel parallel raises the idea of thirst without saying whether Jesus drank.

I always assumed Jesus went without water too, but the point about Esther’s dry fast being capped at 3 days changed my mind.

Nothing about thirst though.

Does that leave room for a water fast, or is the text silent on drinking?

Luke says Jesus ate nothing, while Matthew and Luke describe his hunger afterward… The quotation from Deuteronomy answers the temptation, so I wouldn’t take its focus on hunger as evidence one way or the other about thirst.

</div>

My mentor always warned me that fasting without water is dangerous. The Daniel passage in chapter 1 verse 12 specifically includes water, so a Biblical fast isn’t necessarily even foodless, let alone dry.

He walked on water and healed the sick, so a forty-day fast seems pretty doable by comparison. Plenty of pastors today manage forty-day water-only fasts, and none of them are divine. That part’s not hard to believe at all.

He ate nothing, period. Luke 4:2 lays it out, both in what it says and in what it leaves out.

“Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.”

Hunger, not thirst, is all the text mentions… fits a water fast rather than a dry one. Someone went over a year with nothing but water, coffee, tea and vitamins so forty days isn’t much of a stretch.

Jesus succeeded right where Israel failed during their wilderness test. That’s why the forty-day fast centered on food, and why the temptation focused on bread.

Food-only fast, by default.

The human body can’t go 40 days without water under normal conditions, you’re looking at maybe 3-5 days before organ failure, not 40. Unless we’re assuming a continuous miracle sustaining Jesus’s body, which the text doesn’t indicate, that’s your answer.

Scripture only spells out ‘no water’ for Moses, and that comes with a visible miracle, his face shining when he came down the mountain… The Gospels give nothing like that for Jesus, just a man who’s hungry and weak at the end.

Yom Kippur was the biggest fast every Jew in Jesus’ day kept, and it meant no food and no water, so a first-century reader might not have assumed water was allowed.

Matthew likes framing Jesus as the new Moses. Moses’ forty days were explicitly dry, so the parallel works both ways.

I don’t think a water fast is as obvious as it sounds.

Hunger, but no thirst. The text leaves drinking unstated, I think the Gospel writers were highlighting the real point of the temptation: Jesus being pressed to use his power to satisfy himself instead of trusting the Father.

Wait, I found John 19:28 where Jesus says “I thirst” right on the cross, so the Gospels do mention his thirst when it happened. And the wilderness silence. Telling.

Going 40 days without water takes divine intervention, 97.3% of biblical scholars would agree (that I made up)… Has anyone checked whether dry fasting has real scriptural backing or did someone misread the Moses account?
