Scripture says no one has seen God (John 1:18), and He tells Moses that seeing His face would kill him (Exodus 33:20). Yet a few verses earlier, Moses is said to speak with Him face to face, and Jacob says the same in Genesis 32:30.

I take “face to face” in those spots to mean close communion, not a literal view of God. When He did appear to people like Jacob or Samson’s parents, it was always in some veiled form they could handle.

Has anyone ever actually seen God?

No, no one has ever seen God in His unveiled essence and lived.

What Jacob or Moses encountered were theophanies, God meeting people within human limits, through the Angel of the Lord or a burning bush.

John 14:9 is where it gets interesting. Jesus says whoever has seen Him has seen the Father. So in one sense, the disciples did see God, veiled in flesh. [Can You Physically Feel the Holy Spirit?](https://forum.victoriousinprayer.com/t/can-you-physically-feel-the-holy-spirit/1646)

No human has seen God’s unveiled being, but people have seen visions or appearances through which God made himself known. Numbers 12:6-8 helps here. Moses spoke with God mouth to mouth and saw the form of the Lord, so face to face describes unusually direct communication.

Isaiah could say “My eyes have seen the King” (Isaiah 6:5). Ezekiel was more careful and called what he saw the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord (Ezekiel 1:28).

Revelation 22:4 says God’s servants will see his face, and 1 John 3:2 ties that sight to being transformed to be like him. Mortal humanity can’t endure the unveiled vision.

The plain answer: no. Nobody has seen God as He is.

You’re right that ‘face to face’ for Moses and Jacob means close communion. But I wouldn’t apply that reading every time the phrase shows up, because in 1 Corinthians 13:12 Paul contrasts the dim mirror we have now with a face to face that’s still future.

Then there’s Exodus 24:9-11. Moses and the elders saw the God of Israel. They ate and drank, and they lived. But all the text describes is the pavement under His feet, like sapphire. The glory is real, and looking straight into it isn’t something a person walks away from.

I still take Matthew 5:8 seriously. The pure in heart will see God. Not yet.

John 14:9 always cracks me up, since Philip asks for a divine light show and Jesus says you’ve been eating lunch with Him for years.

1 Corinthians 15:50-53 says mortal humanity has to put on immortality, which helps explain why Revelation 22:4 is a promise made to glorified servants.

You can distinguish Moses’ unusually direct communication from seeing God’s unveiled being while still taking Numbers 12 seriously. Moses received a unique revelation of God, but it came in the way God knew he could bear.

Maybe seeing God includes internal vision too. In deep prayer I’ve had moments where everything outside dropped away, leaving only darkness, and then light from within that darkness.

I wonder if that’s what the mystics mean when they talk about knowing God directly, even if it’s not the unveiled face that kills.

Still stuck on the dove at Jesus’ baptism. It’s one of the only times we ‘see’ the Spirit. God is spirit, but the Spirit of God is also a distinct person even in the Old Testament, since the Father sends the Spirit to rest on certain people.

On the theophanies everyone’s discussing, Jesus is the image of the invisible God. So those Old Testament appearances where God ‘showed himself’ might have been the pre-incarnate Christ all along. Take the cleft of the rock. When God passed by Moses there, could that have been the Son? As Athanasius put it, ‘The Son is the Father’s radiance of light and truth.’

You can’t look at Him directly.

I’ve had visions since I was 18. Premonitions. In some of them there’s this male figure standing to my left, and no matter how hard I try I physically can’t look at his face. The only reason I even know it’s male is because I heard his voice once.

Didn’t know much about the Bible back then. But when I finally started studying and found the ‘you can’t see my face and live’ thing… goosebumps.

God showed up for me in 2003. My father was dying from a heart attack and we had no way to pay for his surgery. Then a friend arrived after driving hours through the night with more money than we needed.

That’s where I’ve seen him. In another person’s hands, breaking through the darkness. Sometimes he steps out of someone you never expected.

The experiences are real. Identifying what’s being experienced is the tricky part.

That deep sense of interconnectedness some people describe in meditation, where everything feels unified and aware, I can see how someone raised in a particular faith might take it as encountering the divine.

But seeing God in the biblical sense is a different question entirely.

Not while we’re still walking around in these bodies, anyway. That’s where God’s sinlessness and the gap it creates come in. His purity meeting our impurity, we aren’t equipped to stand in that presence. It’s what we are, not only what we could physically handle.

I’ve never seen God either. But during those long months beside my mom in hospice, Hagar (Genesis 16:13) carried me more than any vision could have.

Before she marvels at having seen Him, she names Him “the God who sees me.” Seen first.

If part of your question comes from a quiet ache for Him to feel near, you’re already seen by Him.

Surprised nobody’s brought up the end of Exodus 33 yet. God puts Moses in the cleft of the rock, covers him with His hand, and lets him see only His back (whatever that means, people have argued about it for centuries).

34:6-7 is the part that gets me. When the Lord passes by, He proclaims His name: compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. The closest thing to a ‘viewing’ in the whole Old Testament is God describing His character, which feels on brand for Him.

And even then Moses comes down with his face shining so brightly he has to wear a veil, all from the back view alone.

On the reply that mentioned “the Angel of the Lord or a burning bush,” I think you meant the Angel of the Lord in the burning bush.

Exodus 3:2 says the Angel appeared in the flame, so veiled, and by verse 6 Moses is hiding his face because he’s afraid to look at God. Even that veiled appearance was more than he felt he could handle.

The Transfiguration, though. Peter, James, and John were up on that mountain watching Jesus’ face shine like the sun while his clothes turned blazing white.

But it still wasn’t the Father’s face. Jesus said if you’ve seen him you’ve seen the Father, so maybe that’s how we get it for now. Someday, with new bodies, it will be different.
