When I first started taking my walk seriously, I just tossed whatever cash was in my wallet into the plate on Sundays. Simple as that. But as my paycheck has grown… I don’t know what is expected from me. Am I supposed to give more? Say someone pulls in around $60k a year. What’s the right amount to be giving back I’ve heard the 10% figure my whole life, but is that before or after taxes? Do folks here actually stick to that number, or have you landed somewhere different based on where God has led you personally? ---

The word ‘tithe’ literally translates to ‘tenth’, probably the simplest math God’s ever given us, and yet I still second-guess it. Most people calculate that 10% from their after-tax income. ---

Ten percent is the traditional number, and that’s what I do personally. My financial life actually got more stable after I started tithing. Give God some money. Pay attention to what happens next. He’ll prove himself trustworthy with it. ---

I’d also think about the rhythm of it. Money has a way of slipping through our fingers when generosity gets left until the end of the month, tired and accidental. Setting aside your gift when you get paid feels like planting something first. ---

Sorry if this is off-topic but please don’t forget about giving your time too. I used to obsess over the percentage until my pastor gently reminded me that showing up to serve or mentor or help someone move house is also giving. It costs you something real. Money is easy for some of us. Time is the harder sacrifice. ---

Last spring my uncle passed. He left me a small amount, so I split part of it between the church and a food pantry we use around here. Felt right. For the regular 60k income I still aim near 10 percent of what comes in before taxes, but I move things around if something big hits (car repairs, that kind of thing). Keeps me from feeling locked into one rigid number every single time. ---

I think the mindset matters more than the math. 2 Corinthians 9:7 talks about giving cheerfully, not under compulsion. If you’re calculating 10% pre-tax versus post-tax and stressing about the exact dollar amount, you’re probably missing the point. Start with a percentage that feels like a real sacrifice but doesn’t wreck your budget, and increase it as your faith grows. ---

I make a giving plan at the start of the year. No more emotional Sunday decisions. For $60k, you could just sketch out a few numbers on paper, like 5%, 7.5%, or 10%, and pray over which one stretches your faith while still letting you cover the bills responsibly. You can also ask your church for their annual budget or ministry report. Seeing where the money actually goes helps you feel like a real partner in what God is doing. That helped me a lot. The Lord loves forming generous hearts and can guide you step by step. ---

Between you and God. That’s really the answer on the amount. Tithe literally means 10%, sure, but that’s an Old Testament requirement given specifically to the Jews, and it referred to animals and plants (Leviticus 27). Old covenant. New covenant changes things. Christians are called to give, just not necessarily a strict ten percent. ---

Oh wait, that story about the widow’s two coins actually proves the opposite of what people usually say. She gave out of her poverty, but Jesus was observing her, not commanding everyone to do the same. The whole 10% thing might be more about what you can genuinely afford. If you’re saving for a house deposit, maybe that’s not the season for strict tithing. And if your church is already well-funded, cutting checks directly to charities might be just as valid. ---

One verse that helps me is 1 Corinthians 16:2: “On the first day of every week, each of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income.” That sounds regular and proportional, not random or guilt-driven. If your income grows, it makes sense to revisit your giving, but prayerfully rather than by panic. I’d focus less on finding the exact right percent and more on whether you’re setting something aside faithfully as God provides. ---

Scripture doesn’t give you a percentage. The Bible lays out principles and guidelines for giving that go deeper than calculating 10% of your gross versus net. So rather than hunting for that magic figure, I’d dig into what those guidelines actually say about generosity and caring for others. The ‘right amount’ might look different for everyone depending on where God’s leading them. ---

I always do 10 percent after taxes. That’s what actually hits my account, so it just makes sense to me. People get weird about the exact split, but honestly, if your pay went up to 60k, maybe just add a little more each month instead of stressing over the line. Some act like anything less than the full amount means you’re not serious about it. Doesn’t work that way for everyone. ---

Give whatever your heart wants to give. That’s the short answer. The only one really. The tithe was basically a government tax back when God was ruling Israel directly. The priests didn’t get land like the other tribes, so everyone chipped in 1/10 to support them. Pretty solid system when you think about it. But we’re not under that setup anymore. So the amount is between you and God. It could be supporting your pastor, sending Bibles overseas, helping widows in your church, or anything else that bears actual fruit, not just dropping cash in a plate and calling it done. And go do stuff with the rest too. ---

When my husband and I went from barely scraping by to a much steadier income, we had the same question you do. Does the number rise just because the paycheck does? We decided to treat 10% of our gross pay as a starting point for one year, but we also wrote down every month what we were saying no to so it stayed connected to trust instead of becoming just another bill. For us, giving broke the fear that money had over us. The year we had an unexpected medical bill threw a wrench in all of that though. ---

Split it up! I do like 7% to my home church and the rest goes to a missionary family I know personally and a local pregnancy center. Way more satisfying than dumping it all in one plate. Also, automate it. Set it and forget it, otherwise you’ll always find a reason to skip a week. ---

Actually, I’d be careful about only asking ‘what is the right amount?’ without also asking ‘what is God making me a steward of right now?’ If you have debt, dependents, medical costs, or family members you’re supporting, that may shape what faithful giving looks like in this season, even if your salary is around $60k. I see 10% as a helpful benchmark, not a magic line where God is pleased at 10.0% and disappointed at 9.8%.
