How Should We Read 1 Peter 2:18 Today

1 Peter 2:18 is pastoral advice to people trapped in a system they had no power to change. Peter was writing to enslaved believers in the Roman Empire, people who couldn’t vote or run without being hunted down.

The context right before it matters, because Peter points straight to Christ suffering unjustly. God sees the sufferer and honors them. The suffering itself still isn’t good, and the abuser isn’t off the hook.

What helped me was noticing that scripture can describe a reality without prescribing it. The same New Testament plants the seeds that undermined slavery (Paul telling Philemon to receive Onesimus as a brother, for one).

The people who used this verse to justify oppression had to ignore a lot of the surrounding text to get there.

If you can get out of an abusive situation, you should, and Paul says exactly that in 1 Corinthians 7:21.
