Is it okay for a Christian to be cremated?

My spouse and I finally had the death talk. What happens after, who handles what, all of it. We were not prepared. A close family member believes cremation could prevent God from raising someone in the resurrection. I think our bodies return to dust either way, so maybe cremation just speeds it up.

Does the Bible say anything about cremation?

Cremation is fine for Christians, and the Bible doesn’t forbid it anywhere. Burial was the common practice in Scripture, but that was custom, not a command.

Genesis 3:19 says we return to dust either way. And think about believers lost at sea or martyrs burned at the stake. The God who made Adam from dirt can handle ashes. Paul describes the resurrection body as a new thing (1 Corinthians 15), like a seed becoming a plant (see [this thread](https://forum.victoriousinprayer.com/t/what-do-we-do-when-we-go-to-heaven/1706)).

On your family member, their concern comes from a good place. The resurrection is God’s miracle, and it doesn’t depend on how well our remains are preserved.

Make the choice that fits your conscience and your budget.

Yes, I think cremation is fine for Christians. Scripture never ties salvation or resurrection to how a body is handled.

The Bible does treat the body with dignity, so the choice should be made with respect. Cremation can still include a funeral service and a thoughtful resting place for the ashes. Take it slow in that conversation. Philippians 3:21 says Christ will transform our lowly bodies by his power. I don’t understand how resurrection works, but I don’t think a funeral decision can limit it.

I think cremation is fine for a Christian. Your family member’s fear deserves a patient answer, but I don’t see Scripture teaching it. In 1 Samuel 31:11-13 the men of Jabesh-Gilead burned the bodies of Saul and his sons and buried the bones, and in 2 Samuel 2:5-6 David blessed them for that kindness. Some burnings in Scripture were judgments rather than funerals, but that story makes it hard to believe a burned body is out of God’s reach.

It also helped me to ask why burial became the common Christian custom. In the Roman world cremation often went along with the belief that the body was finished and would never be raised, so burying your dead was a way of saying otherwise. We’re not in that world anymore. The part where you and your spouse had the death talk and realized you weren’t prepared, same for us. What helped was writing our wishes down in plain words and explaining them patiently.

Your seed comparison from 1 Corinthians 14, no wait, 15, is exactly what finally settled my mom’s worries about cremation.

Philippians 3:21 is the key here. A power that bends the whole universe to his will isn’t going to be stopped by fire or the bottom of the ocean. A funeral decision can’t limit the resurrection.

Taking the conversation slow is wise. God is patient with us in our confusion, so we owe our family the same patience in theirs.

Your point about a thoughtful resting place for the ashes got me thinking. Is that mainly for the comfort of the living, or do you believe the resting place itself carries witness to resurrection hope?

Both make sense to me, and they don’t compete. The comfort people find at a grave or niche comes from hope. In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 Paul tells believers not to grieve like those who have no hope, and he calls the dead in Christ those who have “fallen asleep.” Our word “cemetery” comes from the Greek koimeterion, a sleeping place. A sleeping place only makes sense if someone is expected to wake up.

A named, marked resting place like a plot or a niche at church can preach a small sermon to visitors: fallen asleep, and one day raised.

I wouldn’t make it a rule though. Believers whose ashes are scattered or who were lost at sea are no less held by God. The resting place doesn’t do anything for the person who died, but it’s a witness for those of us still waiting.

Thank you. That seed comparison in 1 Corinthians 15 helps me too.

I may bring that up with my family member next time cremation comes up.

Sometimes naming where a concern comes from helps people feel heard enough to stay open.

Early Christians chose burial partly because cremation was seen as pagan, so your family member’s hesitation has deep roots, even though Scripture never actually forbids it. Acknowledge that first, then mention grave costs and the practical needs that have led plenty of faithful believers to reconsider.

Cremation’s my plan, if the Lord tarries longer than I expect. If God can raise people from rocks, like Matthew 3:9 says, I’m pretty sure He’s not going to be stumped by a cremation urn.

I’d rather people carry on the ministries and teachings I started than spend a ton on burial or get overly attached to my remains. Adam came from dust, and God can make something new and whole no matter what happens to this body.

Never made sense to me. People call burning a body disrespectful because hell is described as fire, but cremation isn’t condemned anywhere in the Bible. Resurrection gives us a new body anyway, a spiritual one.

There’s an old saying: ‘The potter who shaped the clay can reshape the dust.’

Burial was the practical option, not a divine requirement. Cremation doesn’t put any obstacle in front of God that He can’t handle.

That logic doesn’t hold up. All the martyrs burned at the stake throughout church history aren’t somehow excluded from resurrection. God is capable of resurrecting anyone regardless of what happened to their physical body.

The columbarium option is worth looking into. A lot of cemeteries have dedicated areas for cremated remains now, so families can choose cremation and still have a permanent resting place.

My church is fine with cremation, but scattering the ashes is discouraged. The idea is that a specific place for the remains still points to resurrection hope.

My grandmother had the same fear. She made my grandpa promise “no fire” back when they were in their 50s.

A story her pastor told about John Wycliffe finally changed her mind. Church authorities dug up his bones in 1428, burned them, and scattered the ashes in the river.

She said, “Well, if God can’t find Wycliffe, we’re all in trouble.”

She still chose burial, but stopped seeing cremation as a danger.

Your “returning to dust” point is right. The old words “ashes to ashes, dust to dust” echo Genesis 3:19.

Settle this now, together. Whichever one is left behind shouldn’t carry guilt over it.

I watched a widow choose cremation because she couldn’t afford a burial, then lie awake for months wondering if she’d failed her husband, all over something a relative once said. If you agree ahead of time that either choice honors God, you spare each other that weight during the worst week of your lives.

Knowing where your church stands could make that next family talk a lot calmer.

Call your pastor and ask what your own church teaches. The Catholic Church permits cremation but asks that ashes be kept in a sacred place, not scattered or kept at home. Many Orthodox churches still don’t allow it at all.
