I’ve been hearing a lot about The Chosen and part of me wants to check it out. But the creators themselves keep saying it lines up with Scripture… but does it really? Does it stay true to what’s in the Gospels, or does it take a lot of creative liberties that might mess with how I’m learning about Christ? I don’t want to sink hours into something that’ll leave me with a fuzzy or twisted version of the real thing.

The big events and what Jesus says stick pretty close to the Gospels. The backstory is… mostly invented, though.

Scripture says almost nothing about the disciples’ personal lives, so the writers filled in the gaps with stuff like Matthew being on the autism spectrum and Simon’s marriage problems. A lot of the conversations aren’t in the Bible either. It’s historical fiction built around the Gospel accounts, and the creators are honest about that.

My advice is to watch it with your Bible nearby and treat it as a ‘what might it have been like’ story. As long as you keep that distinction clear, I don’t think it’ll give you a twisted picture. I’ve watched all the seasons so far. It got me deeper into the actual Gospels because I kept going back to check what was real, and Jesus started to feel like a real person to me.

It’s mostly compatible with the Gospels, but not a substitute for them. The show rearranges chronology and fills in motives and emotional context for scenes that Scripture reports in a few verses. That makes for good TV, though a lot of what you’re watching was added by the writers.

The bigger risk is more subtle.

An actor’s tone and delivery can slowly become the version of Jesus you remember. The scenes of Jesus planning and rehearsing the Sermon on the Mount, for example, came entirely from the writers. Matthew doesn’t say anything about that.

I wouldn’t avoid the show but I’d just read each Gospel on its own before watching the matching episodes, and when the show and the text blur together in your memory, trust the text. The Chosen can illustrate Scripture, but it can’t tell you which of its details actually came from Scripture.

I’d say no, it’s not accurate. The creators keep saying it lines up with Scripture, but what they mean is they try not to contradict a verse, which isn’t really the same thing. Plenty of scenes have no basis in the Gospels at all, and the show doesn’t explain that difference very clearly. Maybe 4/10 on that front.

I haven’t come away believing a different gospel, though the Jesus on screen is still the healer and teacher who calls people to follow him, so I’d put the chance of the show twisting the main story at 2 out of 10.

Not contradicting a verse is not the same as proclaiming the Word, and every viewer must learn to separate invented scenes from the Gospel.

Exactly. A lot of the invented material is whole character arcs, not just quick scene transitions. Those additions end up feeling just as authoritative and memorable as the actual Gospel material, even when they’re pure speculation.

Happened to me with the Jesus Film years ago, and I still hear that actor’s voice every time I read the Beatitudes.

Something inside me said to quit watching before those invented scenes got lodged in my head as the real thing.

Has anyone else tried The Jesus Film instead? It’s not very polished or cinematic. But it hugs the actual text so much tighter. There’s something to be said for a version that doesn’t leave you wondering which parts came from Matthew and which came from the writers’ room.

The coolest thing about The Chosen is that the director and everyone making it begs people to think of it as just one possible version of what those days might have looked like. Their whole approach is “come imagine with us.” They don’t want anyone using it instead of actual Scripture.

The show opens with a message telling viewers it’s not a replacement for Scripture and to go read your Bible. I appreciated that. It sets the right expectation from the start.

I wouldn’t steer anyone away from The Chosen. It handles the text wisely.

But the real adventure is always going to be in Scripture and prayer. The Jesus I meet in those pages is greater than any portrayal on screen.

For newer believers trying to get a feel for the context around the Gospel accounts, it does a solid job.

Fiction. The Gospel parts are in there, but everything from the scenes and conversations to the little moments between characters came from the writers and cast.
None of that’s in Scripture.

The Nicodemus thing bothered me. The show has Jesus asking him to become an apostle, so I went back and read that passage myself. There’s nothing there.

The apostles were specifically chosen, which is ironic given the show’s name. If they’re willing to extend apostleship to someone with no scriptural basis at all, what else are they making up?

It’s quality fan fiction more than anything else. Asking if The Chosen is historically accurate is like asking whether Gladiator gets Roman history right. You’re missing the point. The story is the point, not the documentary accuracy.

You’re right that John 3 has no invitation of any kind. In the episode Jesus invites Nicodemus to follow him and Nicodemus turns him down. He never joins the Twelve in the show. Jesus had plenty of followers, including the seventy-two in Luke 10, and named twelve specifically as apostles in Mark 3 and Luke 6.

The invitation itself is still invented, and checking the passage is the right move. What stood out is how little the text gives us on Nicodemus. We get the night conversation in chapter 3, his cautious defense of Jesus in 7:50-51, and his arrival with seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes at the burial in 19:39. The writers built an arc to connect those moments, and a rejected invitation is their guess at why a secret admirer would stay quiet until the cross.

My cousin got into the show last year. He kept pausing it to check if certain lines Jesus said came straight from one gospel or another, and we ended up comparing how Matthew and Mark each tell the same storm on the lake.

They pull details from different books to build one scene, like adding a bit more about the disciples’ fear from another account.

The everyday Jewish prayers and meals stood out most. They showed customs that fit the time period without changing what Jesus did.

The show might shape your sense of who Jesus is, not just whether a scene happened.

Some moments have moved me, especially the tenderness toward the hurting. But I still ask myself, “Is this drawing me toward the Jesus who calls people to repent and believe, or toward a comforting vibe?”

The LDS/Angel Studios connection comes up a lot. From what I’ve seen, it’s more about production and distribution history than Mormon doctrine in the show. Nobody has to watch it to be a serious Christian.

I was quick to call it ‘fake Bible’ before watching much, and I completely missed the text card at the start of episodes saying some timelines were combined and they added backstories and dialogue. So they do tell you, but it’s brief and easy to skip past.

I hadn’t read Luke straight through in years (like [this one](https://forum.victoriousinprayer.com/t/which-book-of-the-bible-should-i-study-first/1677)). And here was a TV series exposing how thin my own knowledge of the Gospels had gotten.

Three people review the scripts. An evangelical Bible scholar and a Catholic priest are on it, along with a Messianic Jewish rabbi. Probably why the Shabbat meals feel so grounded. And the synagogue scenes.

But that means the ‘accuracy’ is negotiated between traditions, so whether something counts as faithful might depend on which tradition you’re coming from in the first place.
