Does Scripture actually give us a clear picture, or is this something each of us kind of imagines in our own way?

What does heaven look like?

Scripture gives more detail, mainly Revelation 21 and 22. There’s a city of pure gold, gates of pearl, a river of life, and no sun or moon because God Himself is the light. A new heaven and a new earth, so creation gets renewed.

That said, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:9 that no eye has seen what God has prepared for those who love Him. So even John’s vision is probably symbols straining to describe something bigger.

My take is that Revelation 21:3 is the point: God dwelling with us, face to face, every tear wiped away (see [this](https://forum.victoriousinprayer.com/t/what-do-we-do-when-we-go-to-heaven/1706)).

Scripture only gives us glimpses. God’s throne, angels, a huge crowd from every nation, worship, a wedding feast, Jesus preparing a place for his people.

Heaven looks like life fully restored in God’s presence. We’ll see Christ ‘face to face’ (1 Corinthians 13:12), and everything that distorts life now, sin, grief, fear, and separation, will be gone.

C. S. Lewis wrote, ‘Joy is the serious business of Heaven.’ Imagination can help here, but Scripture keeps pulling our attention away from the scenery and back to the One who makes heaven heaven.

Scripture is pretty clear that heaven is a place and quiet about most of the visuals, so imagination only fills in what the text leaves open.

What sticks with me is how solid it all sounds. The risen Jesus could be touched, and he ate. Paul says our bodies will be like his, so I picture real people, recognizable and whole. Isaiah talks about houses people build and live in, and vineyards they plant and eat from. Homes and meals. The fine points I’m okay not knowing. I start with faces I’d recognize.

When you read Revelation 21:3 next to all the gold and pearl imagery, you realize the real treasure is simply being with God.

I think you’re right that the symbols point beyond themselves, though I’d still take the renewed earth part fairly given Romans 8.

That emphasis on the One who made heaven heaven resonated with me. During a season of grief, the descriptions of gates and streets felt distant, but the thought of seeing Christ face to face was personal and steadying. Revelation 21:3 added something important to those glimpses; the loud voice announced that God’s dwelling is with his people.

Heaven, in John’s picture, comes down to being with God. He spends time on the gold and the light, but the verse about God dwelling with us carries the whole vision.

The tear-wiping detail gets me every time. A whole chapter of cosmic renewal, a city coming down out of heaven, and then the picture narrows to a hand touching a face.

I sat with that verse for months after losing someone close to me. The streets of gold felt distant and abstract. But what you named did comfort me. God near enough to wipe the tears, near enough that the wiping is necessary, like He lets us carry our sorrow right up to the threshold and meets it there Himself.

And fully, without the veil. I still don’t know what to do with that part.

Romans 8 does describe creation itself being set free. I like the idea that heaven might be more familiar than we usually picture, made whole.

If the renewed earth is fairly literal though, do you think we’d recognize the specific places we loved in this life?

Scripture never answers that directly, so I hold it loosely, but the closest clue I can find is the risen Jesus himself, whom Paul calls the firstfruits. His friends did recognize him, though not always at first: Mary took him for the gardener until he spoke her name. He was the same Jesus, wounds and all, yet changed in a way that took a moment of grace to see. If creation follows the pattern of its Lord, I imagine the places we loved might meet us the same way, strange for a heartbeat and then suddenly, unmistakably known.

It also stays with me that Revelation 21 says the kings of the earth will bring their glory into the city, which suggests that not everything this world has made and loved is simply thrown away, but that some of it’s carried through, purified and offered up.

I can’t say whether it will be the exact shoreline where we watched our children play or the kitchen where someone we lost used to hum while cooking. I suspect that whatever was good in those places was always a faint echo of the One who made them, and that when we stand in the renewed earth we may realize we’re not so much seeing those places again as finally seeing what they were trying to be all along.

Heaven is a way of being together. Scripture hints at that, I think, without ever quite spelling it out.

There’s that old parable where heaven and hell are the same banquet hall, same long-handled spoons and all. The only difference is that in heaven, people figured out they could feed each other.

Maybe the picture of heaven is about finally living the way we were made to live, turned toward one another instead of grasping for ourselves.

It’s going to be physical. Randy Alcorn makes a pretty strong case for that in ‘Heaven,’ which digs into this way more than I expected. Eden restored, new bodies, actual tangible existence.

Apparently the Bible says a lot more about it than we realize.

</div>

Sounds like the Bible cares more about who we’ll be with than the decor. No growing old, no sorrow. Bodies at their peak, and we’ll recognize the people we knew here. But we’ll be fully sanctified and perfectly joyful all the time, which is a lot to wrap your head around.

Scripture doesn’t frame it as ‘heaven.’ It points more toward a renewed earth where we live and work without corruption or sorrow, and keep creating. Real life, made whole.

</div>

Union with God, eternal joy, beatitude, none of that’s scenery, it’s a state of being. It’s the point where the restlessness we carry now finally ends because we’re home with the One we were made for.

Heaven is what it feels like to be fully known and fully loved, forever.

I think we’ll be in a non-physical world. God shapes everything around His presence, so the look might be beyond what our current senses can process. Scripture leaves so much of the scenery open.

The clearest picture Scripture gives us isn’t about the scenery. It’s about who we become there, shaped into God’s likeness with our wills finally aligned with His. That transformation defines heaven more than any description of streets or gates.

Exodus 24 painted a picture for me. God threw a party for Moses and the elders, and they saw something like a pavement of sapphire under his feet. Sapphire. God decorates with precious stones.

There was food involved, so heaven started to feel less abstract and more like an actual celebration. The gold and jewels in Revelation made more sense after that.

I don’t think anyone knows what it looks like. If everything is perfect, no sin exists there at all, like people somehow forgot how to make mistakes. That’s what blows my mind, more than streets or gates.

One caution. Revelation may not be trying to give us a literal floor plan.

The city being a perfect cube in Revelation 21 reminded me of the Holy of Holies (where God’s presence dwelt in the temple), so maybe the picture is saying the whole place is now God’s dwelling, not just one sacred room.

Heaven is about unbroken access to Him, not decoding measurements.
