I keep noticing two things in myself: I judge other people more than I want to, and I lose my temper more often than I’d like. I’m not sure how to think about either one biblically.

With anger, I’ve heard people say any anger is sinful. But then Jesus flips tables, and Paul says, “Be angry and do not sin.” So where’s the line?

Judging feels even less clear to me. Jesus says not to judge, but we’re also told to use discernment and deal with sin in the church.

What does the Bible actually say about judging others and anger?

When Jesus says “judge not” in Matthew 7, He gives the log-and-speck illustration, which assumes you’ll help with the speck, after some self-examination. Paul’s “be angry and don’t sin” in Ephesians 4 works the same way. He adds “don’t let the sun go down on your anger” because anger held overnight becomes a foothold.

Righteous anger grieves over real wrong, like Jesus at the temple. Sinful anger defends my ego and demands its own way. The verse that convicts me most here is James 1:20: “the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.”

When I catch myself judging someone harshly, a flash of temper follows within seconds, because both come from the same place: putting myself in God’s seat. What helps is asking, “Am I grieved by this, or just offended?” Grief leads me to pray for the person, and offense leads me to condemn them.

Scripture does call us to discernment (like [this one](https://forum.victoriousinprayer.com/t/what-is-the-gift-of-discernment/1696)). 1 Corinthians 5 even commands the church to address sin, but with restoration as the goal, Galatians 6:1 says “in a spirit of gentleness.”

Jesus overturning the tables was deliberate. James 1:19-20 warns that human anger doesn’t produce the righteousness that God desires.

Jesus says to judge with right judgment in John 7:24, so discernment means recognizing what’s true without assuming motives or putting yourself above the other person. Galatians 6:1 is a good test if correction is needed.

When I catch myself getting angry or judgmental, I try to ask whether I’m trying to help someone toward what’s right or punishing them for upsetting me. Usually it’s the second one.

My two cents. ‘Any anger is sin’ contradicts Paul saying to be angry and don’t sin. But the temper I lose is usually quick anger because I feel slighted, and Ecclesiastes 7:9 calls that foolish.

Proverbs 19:11 has helped me here. It’s to a person’s glory to overlook an offense, and a lot of what sets me off doesn’t need a comeback.

On judging, I take ‘do not judge’ to mean don’t hand down a final verdict. 1 Corinthians 5 expects the church to deal with serious sin while leaving outsiders to God. Romans 14 stops me from condemning people over disputable matters, and James 4:12 keeps me humble about it. I can call an action wrong without pretending I get the final say on someone.

Proverbs 19:11 is a good one to memorize, and saying it quietly before replying to anything that stings has saved me from plenty of foolish comebacks.

Your grieved versus offended test caught me last week, since most of my “righteous” anger turned out to be about my own pride.

Next time you feel slighted, try waiting a full minute before answering, since Proverbs 19:11 gets a lot easier when the comeback has time to cool.

Paul’s wording allows for anger but puts a limit on it. The warning about not letting the sun go down on it fits your point, even if anger doesn’t start as sin, it can get there pretty fast.

Mine usually gets there well before bedtime. My ego is nothing if not efficient.

Galatians 6:1 doesn’t get used nearly enough for this. The part that gets me is the second half: “keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.” Paul assumes the person doing the correcting is one bad day away from the same sin. That humility check keeps correction from turning into the punishing-for-upsetting-me thing you described.

My test is the word “restore” itself. If I can’t say my goal is to see this person put back together, then whatever I’m about to say is my temper wearing a spiritual costume. I ran that test last year and failed it. Stayed quiet, and it changed a friendship.

Forgive them, for they know not what they do.

When I catch myself judging harshly, I try to remember that fear and ignorance drive a lot of what frustrates me in others. God has a plan for them, one I’m not privy to. Mercy over anger.

That word though. ‘Discerning.’ It changed how I read a lot of passages.

I used to get hung up on what looked like a contradiction, until someone pointed out that when the New Testament talks about judging, it’s really about discernment. Discern the spirits. Discern who or what is a stumbling block for you, and avoid it.

But the final verdict stuff, declaring someone is going to hell or heaven, isn’t ours to do.

The hardest cases for me are when someone clearly knows they’re doing wrong. That’s exactly when my discernment wants to turn into condemnation.

Staying in that space between seeing sin clearly and playing final judge takes more grace than I usually have on my own.

Nobody’s brought up Matthew 18:15 yet. Go to the person alone.

A guy in my men’s group kept making comments that got under my skin, and I brought it up as a prayer request with two other guys instead of talking to him. I was judging him with an audience. When I finally sat down with him over coffee, half of what I was angry about turned out to be a misunderstanding.

Now if I catch myself wanting to tell someone else about a person before I’ve talked to that person, I treat it as a red flag. My anger is looking for allies, not resolution.

</div>

Almost every time I’m tempted to point to the temple to justify my own anger, I’m upset about myself.

Scripture seems to give us room to judge actions while being firm that we can’t judge hearts. Jesus says in John 7:24 to judge with right judgment rather than by appearances.

Most of my unfair judging is about the story I tell myself about why someone did something, which is exactly the part I have no access to.

In John 2, Jesus took the time to make a whip of cords. It wasn’t a snap reaction, and his anger was about people being exploited in his Father’s house, not about anyone insulting him.

Romans 14 got me. I looked down on a couple of church families who let their kids watch things I wouldn’t. Then a friend pointed out that Paul treats stuff like that as disputable matters and asks, “Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?”

Now I ask whether I’m reacting to actual sin or to a conviction that’s different from mine.

Discernment and condemnation are different. The “judge not” teaching trips people up because they take it to mean never evaluate anyone.

You can recognize wrong, you don’t get the final verdict. Next time that judgmental impulse rises, ask yourself if you’re seeking restoration or pronouncing sentence.
