Servant leadership. Jesus says it in John 13:14-15: he set an example so they would do for each other what he had done for them.

Foot washing was the job of the lowest household servant, so when the Teacher and Lord knelt down with a towel, he was turning greatness upside down (see [this](https://forum.victoriousinprayer.com/t/how-should-we-read-1-peter-2-18-today/1697)). John frames the scene by saying Jesus knew his hour had come and that he loved his own “to the end.” The basin was a preview of the cross.

What gets me is that he washed Judas’s feet too. He knew who was about to betray him, and he still knelt and did the servant’s work.

Peter resists, and Jesus tells him “unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” Some of us are more comfortable serving than being served, and Jesus says you have to let him cleanse you before you can pass that love along.
