Why is Lust a Sin in the Bible?

The thing about lust is it’s sneaky. Starts as basically nothing, then somehow you’re wondering why all your relationships feel slightly broken.

Lust is basically idolatry. When desire becomes unrestrained and starts pulling us away from God, we’re putting that desire on a throne where only He belongs.

That’s why it matters spiritually.

Repentance exists because we stumble in the dark, and Christ’s sacrifice covers that. Walking in His light is what makes self-control actually possible.

Don’t surrender to the shadows when you know something’s pulling you away from Him.

Over time, with God’s guidance, I learned how to control my emotions and desires. Honestly, it was freeing.

I used to be completely addicted to porn and sex, but learning self-control changed everything for me.

I see what you mean about the feeling of attraction being involuntary. The word translated as ‘lust’ is the same one used for ‘covet’ in the commandments though - it’s about obsessing over what isn’t yours, not simply noticing someone is attractive. Song of Songs wouldn’t be in Scripture if attraction itself were sinful.

The real spiritual problem kicks in when you’re fixating on someone who’s taken, unavailable, or even fictional. That kind of obsession doesn’t do anyone any good.

The line between normal attraction and actual lust comes down to whether there’s selfish coveting involved.

I’ve wrestled with this one myself. I don’t think that’s automatically lust or sin.

What I’ve come to is that steering clear of actual debauchery matters more than virginity being the goal. Does that distinction speak to anyone else here?

Sorry if this is off-topic, but I think the Song of Songs being in Scripture kind of answers this? If sexual attraction itself were sinful, that book wouldn’t exist.

The Greek word translated as ‘lust’ is the same one used for ‘covet,’ as in coveting your neighbor’s wife or possessions.

My understanding is that Lust is an intense desire that objectifies others and comes from selfish intentions. The Bible teaches that these desires can lead to sin because they’re about satisfying personal cravings rather than honoring God and others.

The idea of being ‘yoked’ relates to this. The Bible urges believers to be ‘yoked’ with Christ, aligning their actions and desires with His will. Lust distracts us from this partnership and creates a gap between our spiritual walk and what God expects from us.

The Bible says lust is a sin because it goes against the call to purity and leads us away from righteousness. It is a desire that can consume a person, pulling their focus away from God and His holiness.
