When Jacob wrestled with God was it a metaphor or did he actually wrestle with Jesus? Could it have been Jesus in a pre-incarnate form, or was it another manifestation of God?

I believe Jacob wrestled with a manifestation of God, likely the pre-incarnate Christ or an angel representing Him.
It says Jacob saw “God face to face” and Hosea refers to it as striving with an angel. The key message is Jacob’s spiritual struggle and God’s blessing… despite his flaws.
This points to Christ’s later work on the cross, where God allowed Himself to be “defeated” for our ultimate good.
In the darkness of Jacob’s struggle, he encountered the divine light. We commonly say we wrestle with something, which doesn’t mean physically wrestling. It also doesn’t mean it didn’t change his life.
I think Jacob wrestled with an angel sent by God, not actually Jesus himself since Jesus had yet to come in human form.
Yeah, the encounter was before His incarnation. The wrestling match foreshadows Jesus’ later ministry of transforming lives through personal encounters. While we know Him as Jesus today, His eternal nature as the Word, or Logos, existed long before Bethlehem.
From what I understand, angels can take physical form, and even God Himself has appeared in angelic form in Scripture.
This brings to mind the Advent readings we do, where we often encounter these divine messengers. The way the Angel of the Lord accepts worship and speaks with such authority in the Old Testament stories is like a glimpse of Christ before His incarnation. It’s beautiful how these ancient accounts connect to our faith today.
It’s hard to really say for sure; it would take some serious Bible study.
In my humble understanding, this scripture speaks of a divine encounter. Maybe an angel or a manifestation of the Almighty Himself.
The beauty of His Scripture is that it often invites us to consider its deeper meanings. I encourage you to read this sacred text with an open heart and let the Holy Spirit illuminate its truth for you personally. The Word of God never ceases to inspire awe and reverence in those who seek its wisdom.
This story shows me that it’s okay to struggle, to wrestle with the divine, as it often leads to a stronger, more authentic relationship with Him.
