Difference Between a Pastor, Priest and Preacher?

I know this might be a daft question and there’s probably some overlap but…

What’s the difference between a pastor, priest and preacher?

I used to use pastor and preacher interchangeably.

A pastor is tied to a specific group of people. It’s the person a congregation trusts to teach them and look after them. A preacher is defined by the message. Someone can preach and still not be anyone’s pastor.

Priest is the tricky one. It tripped me up too until I looked at how the New Testament uses the word. It points to Jesus as our high priest and to all believers as a priesthood, which is why most of the churches I’ve been in won’t call the person leading worship a priest.

I’ve seen pastors do most of their real work in living rooms and hospital rooms.

The words describe different aspects of ministry rather than three fixed ranks.

A preacher is anyone proclaiming or explaining God’s word… A pastor is someone entrusted with shepherding a particular congregation (see this thread).

A priest is different. You usually run into it in churches where ordained ministers serve at the altar and administer the sacraments.

So one person might be all of these at once, ordained as a priest and serving as pastor of a parish, while also preaching during worship.

Growing up Baptist and marrying into a Catholic family sorted this out for me. The first time I called Father Mike “Pastor Mike” at a holiday dinner, my spouse’s grandmother gave me a long explanation of apostolic succession.

A priest is an ordained office that includes administering sacraments, Catholic and Anglican. A pastor shepherds a congregation and a preacher is anyone who preaches, so a Catholic priest can be the pastor of his parish and a Baptist pastor almost always preaches too.

That’s how it was at my childhood parish, where our priest was also the pastor and did nearly all the preaching.

God uses a Baptist upbringing and a Catholic marriage to open you to the wider richness of His Church.

How have those two traditions shaped the way you see those roles, pastor compared to priest or preacher?

Baptist side, a pastor knows and cares for a congregation, not just someone who gives sermons. My Catholic family calls their ordained minister a priest, especially in relation to the sacraments, and ‘preacher’ still sounds like what someone does rather than the whole of their calling.
