It isn’t me… but someone I know is going through a crisis of faith. They told me they think they’ve lost their faith in God… and I don’t know what to tell them.
Losing faith usually means losing a feeling, and feelings come and go even for the strongest believers. A few years back, I went through a stretch where praying felt like talking to a ceiling. What got me through was being honest about the doubt instead of hiding it. Scripture is full of people who wrestled with God openly, and he never seems bothered by it.
With your friend, don’t rush to fix anything. When someone told me to ‘just believe harder’ it made things worse. What actually helped was a friend who listened and asked what specifically had shaken me, without treating me like a project. Doubt usually has a root somewhere, like grief or unanswered prayer, and finding it matters more than winning an argument.
Did your friend say what set this off, or did it come on gradually with no clear cause? That changes a lot. If it came from pain, they need comfort first. If it’s more about intellectual questions, that calls for a different kind of conversation and maybe some good reading.

When someone loses faith, it helps to figure out what actually broke. It might be belief in God himself or trust in his goodness or Scripture, or a church that hurt them. Those are different wounds and each one needs different care.
I’d ask your friend what changed for them, then help them find a pastor or counselor who will take that specific issue seriously without shaming them. Faith can sometimes be rebuilt, but it’s usually slow, and it doesn’t always happen.
Tell your friend that God stays faithful for them even when their faith is gone.
I went through a long stretch where I couldn’t say I trusted Him and figured the whole thing was over, but it wasn’t. So when your friend says they think their faith is gone, you don’t need a clever answer.
I wish someone had read me 2 Timothy 2:13 back then: “If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.” Share that with them. Just don’t turn it into a lecture… They might not be able to hold onto it yet. God’s faithfulness doesn’t depend on how much faith they can scrape together today.
