What actually counts as idolatry?
Is it just believing in anything that wasn’t already covered in the Bible?

Idolatry is putting anything in the place that belongs to God alone.
That’s why Colossians 3 can call greed idolatry. Money existed in Scripture and nobody carved it into a statue.
The test I use is what I’d fall apart without.
Believing some ordinary fact the Bible doesn’t mention isn’t idolatry first of all.
Idolatry is letting something created, including another person’s opinion of me, have the fear and the final say that belong to God. How fast I jump to protect that approval and how long it takes me to even admit I’m doing it.
Idolatry is worshiping a created thing as a god, or shrinking God down to an image or a version we can manage and the golden calf is the classic example. Aaron called it a feast to the Lord, so they thought they were worshiping God.
Ouch, the “how long it takes me to even admit it” part landed, because my record for noticing is roughly 3 business days.
I’d tweak the fall apart test a little, since I’d struggle badly without my spouse and that feels more like love than idolatry.
Grieving hard when you lose someone you love seems like what God built us for… Maybe the line is whether we still trust Him on the other side of the loss, or we decide He’s not worth following anymore.
Cutting corners on responsibilities to make room for one particular thing? That’s worth examining. Idolatry is whatever keeps pulling you out of your rhythm.
I play video games and watch secular movies with non-Christian friends, and none of that feels like idolatry because I know I’d walk away from it if following Christ required it.
But I wonder if that test is too easy to pass in theory. Has anyone found a gap between what they thought they’d release and what happened when it was tested?
The football guy who rushes out of church every Sunday to catch the game is putting something created above worship… but someone actually bowing to a statue in religious worship? I wonder if we should distinguish that.
The gap shows up in smaller choices. Game keeps me up so late that I skip prayer, and the issue isn’t the game, it’s how quickly I make excuses for giving it that time.
