The gift shows up most in the mismatch. Someone says something, you check the actual words in the Bible, and they don’t line up.
I only started noticing after making it a habit to look up verses during conversations. It helps with prayer requests too, spotting when one is coming from fear rather than faith.
Discernment is also about spotting what’s right, where God’s already at work in someone. Sometimes the gift says, “that’s God, encourage it.”
Discernment is about figuring out what’s going on, not just spotting darkness.
A guy started showing up at our Wednesday prayer meeting. Every time he was around I felt this heavy, unsettled vibe and figured something spiritual was off. Turned out his wife had left him two months earlier and he was barely keeping it together. The right move was bringing him a meal, not rebuking anything.
1 Corinthians 12:10 calls it “distinguishing between spirits,” and Hebrews 5:14 says discernment gets trained by practice.
Some of the best discernment I’ve seen was noticing God’s hand on someone quiet in the back row that everyone else overlooked.
