So is discernment basically just… knowing? Like being able to tell when something dark is going on with a person, oppression, possession, that kind of thing?
What is the gift of discernment and how do you know if you have it?
That can be part of it, but in Scripture it shows up more often around false teaching than possession or oppression. Paul calls it “discerning of spirits” in 1 Corinthians 12:10, and it’s the Spirit-given ability to tell whether something comes from God, human nature, or something darker. Think of the Bereans in Acts 17 testing what Paul said against Scripture, or 1 John 4 telling us to test the spirits because many false prophets are out there. Someone with this gift will notice a sermon or book sounds good but is subtly off, sometimes long before anyone else catches it.
If you have it, other believers usually confirm it over time.
People with this gift can drift into being critical of everything, and without love and humility it turns into plain suspicion with a spiritual label slapped on it.

A strong feeling about someone doesn’t prove oppression or possession. Discernment should make us careful and prayerful, and slow to label people.
If you think you might have the gift, look for a pattern where your judgments bring clarity or protection and where mature believers confirm that. The measure is agreement with Scripture along with good fruit in humble service, not how intense the impression feels.
A real gift can take correction.

I used to think the gift of discernment was a secret knowing, like an alarm for oppression or possession.
It is Spirit-given clarity about whether a word or a ministry is healthy or off. It shows up as a calm read on a situation that ends up protecting people. Your sense keeps getting confirmed by Scripture and by other steady believers, and people walk away clearer. The folks I’ve trusted with this gift are weirdly unflashy. They’ll ask one simple question that deflates a shiny spiritual claim, then stick around to help afterward. If all you’ve got is a strong feeling and a habit of spotting darkness on people, that’s a hunch at best.
