Did Jesus ever actually say he is God?
I always understood he is the son of God but someone at Church told me he was God… not sure if I am confused or he was.

Not in those exact words, but he did say things only God gets to say. In John 8 he tells the crowd “before Abraham was, I am” and they pick up stones, because they know what he’s claiming. In John 10 he says “I and the Father are one.”
I doubt you and the person at church are even disagreeing. Christians have always held that he’s both Son of God and God.
Thomas is what settled it for me. “My Lord and my God” he says, and Jesus accepts it. If he weren’t God, that was the moment to correct him.
Jesus never says the exact words ‘I am God’ but he speaks and acts with God’s authority… In Mark 2 he forgives a man’s sins and the religious leaders object, because only God can do that.
In the trial in Mark 14, Jesus says he’ll sit at God’s right hand and come with the clouds of heaven. The people hearing him know what he’s claiming and charge him with blasphemy.
When historic Christianity calls him ‘Son of God’ it means the Father and the Son are distinct and both fully God.
He didn’t say the exact sentence ‘I am God,’ and he also repeatedly prays to the Father as someone distinct from himself. But the disciples worship him in Matthew 28 and he… accepts it. At least as far as I could make out from scripture.
The Thomas moment. I keep doubting all this and Jesus accepting “my Lord and my God” without correcting him feels like solid ground.
John explicitly says Thomas is speaking to Jesus, and Jesus’ response ties Thomas’s words to believing: ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed’ (John 20:29).
Jesus leaves the confession uncorrected and treats it as faith.
Mark 14 gets overlooked. He’s quoting Daniel 7 there, where the one coming with the clouds gets a kingdom that everyone serves and that never ends, and the high priest tears his robes right there.
Was it the Daniel 7 connection that made the Sanhedrin react so fast or mostly the ‘right hand’ part?
